Zalando Technology introduced a new shared leadership model within its organizational approach “Radical Agility”. As a Backend Lead - People Management, so called Practice Lead you will partner with Delivery Leads to coach and empower individuals working in autonomous teams along the path of innovation and delivery of high quality, state of the art software.  

Working one on one with backend engineers, you develop relationships built on trust and act as a coach for each of your directs; aligning their individual motivation, growth and goals with those of Zalando Tech.  Your mission is to set the bar for engineers at Zalando and work directly with them on their journey to Mastery.

Your Challenges

  • In collaboration with Delivery Leads and Software Architects ensure that Zalando’s backend engineering standards and performance expectations are met by your directs.
  • Coach and mentor individuals, to raise the performance bar for backend engineers working in autonomous delivery teams.  
  • Inspire and encourage individuals to grow their skills and capabilities through discovering and following their passion and purpose.
  • Act as a key contributor in developing Zalando Tech’s overall technical capabilities by aligning individual purpose with company and team purpose.
  • Conduct regular performance assessments.
  • Develop and evangelize great engineering practices and a strong feedback culture across all of Zalando Tech.  
  • Work with recruiting team to attract, onboard, and retain diverse top talent.
  • Cultivate a culture of ownership, autonomy, mastery, innovation, and purpose.


Your Profile

  • You hold a degree in Computer Science or have equivalent experience as a software engineer.
  • You have 5-10 years of direct experience and a ton of passion for back-end technologies.
  • You can lead, coach and mentor software engineers, team and collaborate with other leaders.  
  • Preferably, you have solid experience from working in an agile development environment.
  • You are passionate about developing and growing people.
  • You communicate with empathy, influence and inspiration.
  • You deal with and resolve conflicts in a graceful manner.
