The Technology Innovation Lab - also known as the “Shuttle” - supports this mission by evaluating the potential of emerging technologies together with other product and engineering teams as well as strategic partners. In addition to that, our intrapreneurship program provides a breeding-ground for ideas from people within the Tech department. A 450sqm digital fabrication “makerspace”, the Shuttle is accompanied by a small, international and multidisciplinary team of researchers and project coaches. We are out-of-the-box thinkers who work on future topics at the junction of fashion, retail and technology.

As a R&D Engineer in our team, you have a strong technical expertise and share our entrepreneurial spirit. You identify opportunity areas, explore ideas, generate project proposals, and develop proof of concepts to validate your hypotheses. You are aligning, testing, and iterating these research projects with various stakeholders within and outside of Zalando. You will also act as a bridge to Zalando’s academic research team and the rest of our diverse engineering department.

Autonomy. You will drive a variety of research & prototyping projects as technical expert to test feasibility and allow for rapid evolution of ideas. You collect the right data to take the right project decisions. You are developing and maintaining an excellent network of external partners for collaboration and co-innovation, such as research institutes, startups, and domain experts. You feel comfortable interacting with the top management.

Ownership. You and your team will work like a startup and take ownership for the whole project cycle - from ideation to prototyping.

Excellence. You will join a team that is dedicated to delivering the highest standards. You will add value by leveraging current technology trends (e.g. AR/VR, computer vision, machine learning, etc.) You are not afraid of failing often and early and take the right learnings out of it.

You Are

Skilled. In working with a variety of programming languages (e.g. Java, Python, Objective-C, JavaScript, Scala, SQL). You can quickly prototype an application and have sufficient knowledge about front-end frameworks (e.g. React, AngularJS), databases (e.g. SQL and noSQL), and mobile platforms (e.g. Android, iOS).

Explorative. You can quickly acquire skills in technologies you are not familiar with. You follow current trends in software design, architecture and web services.

Motivated. In making a positive impact on our engineering culture and encouraging knowledge sharing. You’re excited about new tech trends that will impact our future work.

Ambitious. In creating innovations that re-define our product landscape.
